Our first day in Amsterdam began at the Noordermarket. After shopping around and buying some warm gloves cause Amsterdam was freezing cold we stopped at a corner café and ate the most delicious apple pie. Then we went on another free walking tour. It was really good just as the others. We went through the red light district which was awkward seeing girls in the window, and even more weird seeing guys walk out the door. But then we went to a few cool churches, the Jewish Quarter, the Royal Palace and Dam Square. We saw the widest bridge and the smallest house which are right next to each other. The house was tiny! The man who lives there can’t even lie down in his house from side to side because it is too narrow. It’s so small because back in the olden days they were taxed by how wide their houses were. Our tour ended at the Anne Frank house. I had no idea that Anne Frank lived in Amsterdam so that was a surprise. But it was really interesting to see the actual house and to hear the church bells that she heard and everything. A pretty neat experience. Also on the tour we passed many coffee shops as well as the hash marijuana and hemp museum. We learned some interesting things about marijuana in Amsterdam. It is actually illegal to sell, grow, or smoke in Holland, but the mentality of the people that live there is very different than anywhere else. For example, it is illegal to smoke or to drink in public, but as long as you aren’t causing any problems, bothering anyone, or putting anyone else in danger then the cops won’t bother you. The police spend their time and space in jails for serious offenders, such as hard drugs and murderers. And that mentality is present all over Amsterdam; right in the middle of the red light district is a huge Catholic church. The city of Amsterdam was beautiful though. All the houses were as cute as can be and all the water and canals, it was really cool. It was a very interesting place to visit!

Everyone rode bikes in Amsterdam. The saying goes if you here the bell, run like hell, because they have no problem hitting anyone.

The XXX is the symbol for Amsterdam. Back when they were very big world wide traders before people could read and right XXX was the symbol for Amsterdam and it just stuck. Kind of ironic now. Other people associate it with the three dangers of Amsterdam- water, fire, and drugs.
This is where the miracle of Amsterdam occured.
The tiny red slit of a red bricks in the middle is the smallest house in Amsterdam.
