Trinity College
I took a lovely tour of Trinity College. It is the oldest college in Ireland. It was built by Elizabeth I in 1592. In their old library was the book of Kells. It was way cool, but I couldn’t take pictures inside the building at all which was kind of a bummer. In the same library, that’s the old library, they don’t use it for studying, they had the harp of Brian Boru that is associated with much of ireland. It is most commonly known as the harp on top of any pint of Guinness, but is also seen on the Irish passports and many government things. It was very pretty. It’s weird though in that library how they organize their books; instead of alphabetical, by author, or dewy decimal system, they order them by size. Biggest on bottom, smallest on top, and in section by topic, but the library is huge. It is the largest single cell library in the world. It reminded me of the library on beauty and the beast because they have ladders you climb to get to the top shelf and then the ladders slide along the whole row. But imagine how hard it would be to find a book, you’d have to know the exact deminsions to be able to find it. It was interesting. The chapel at the school is also famous because it was the first church in Ireland that was opened to all four of the major religions at the time for worship- the church of Ireland-Anglican, the church of England, the Methodist church, and the Catholic church. Across from the chapel is a building that mirrors it exactly, that is the exam hall. It is supposed to symbolize that you are judged on the right hand by God, and on the other hand you are judged by man. The blue on the clock face is known as Trinity College blue instead of sky blue because you see it more in that school, which isn’t a ton, than you do in the sky. Funny little story, the scientist who explained why the sky was blue graduated from their; wonder how he did his research. On the bell tower there are four figures that represent the four school or studies when the school was opened- medicine, science, law, and divinity.
